Tampons: All Your Questions Answered

Tampons have been around for centuries. Nancy Friedman, in her 1981 book All You Need to Know About Tampons notes that researchers found evidence of Egyptian women using tampons as early as the 15th century B.C. The ancient Romans used wool tampons, while the Egyptians used soft papyrus tampons. Over the years, paper, grasses, and other plants have been used as period supplies.

Even though tampons are so common, they still raise a lot questions. What absorbency should I choose? Do I have to be concerned about toxic shock syndrome? Can a tampon get stuck? Do they hurt?

The doctors are always willing to dispel the myths surrounding tampons. You may have more questions than that. Experts address some of the other concerns that people have.

What is a tampon?

Menstrual products are also known as tampons. It’s a product that you can use to absorb material shed by your uterus during your period. It’s normal for tampons to be confusing at first. When you are learning how to use tampons, it’s fine to request help.

How often should a tampon be changed?

Guidelines for tampon usage are not just suggestions. Never leave a tampon on for longer than eight hours. It’s not uncommon for people to change their tampons every four to six to hours. If you leave a tampon on for too long, it can cause a bacterial disease called toxic-shock syndrome and other serious health issues.

Can I use a night tampon?

can sleep with a tampon. You should insert a fresh tampon before you go to bed and replace it immediately in the morning.

Do tampons hurt?

It’s normal to feel some discomfort when inserting a tampon, but it shouldn’t be painful. The size of the tampon is important: You should use a tampon that matches the amount of flow. There are a few best practices you should follow when inserting the tampon. This includes washing your hand, relaxing and angling the tab.

Do tampons get stuck at all?

Don’t worry if you find that your tampons are stuck. They will eventually come out. Relax and find the tampon or the string yourself using your fingertips. This can be helped by changing positions. If you are still unsuccessful, urgent care or express care, or your family doctor’s or Ob/Gyn office, can be of assistance.

Do I need to use scented tampons for my ovaries?

It’s tempting to try out the scented tampons or pads that are on the shelves. It’s better to use unscented products. Why? Why?

Does tampons expire?

tampons do expire. The average tampon lasts five years. However, if they are stored in the bathroom, or in any other place where it is damp or wet, then they can become moldy and a breeding ground of bacteria.
